Now, time to show you how to use Notebooklm strategically...
1- Go to Google Notebook LM: https://notebooklm.google/ and click Try Notebook LM.
2- Upload Source: Drop in your PDFs, Google Docs, or paste any URL right into NotebookLM - it processes everything in seconds! Perfect for quick searches within your sources and creative brainstorming.
I have uploaded three different papers one by one in the project for data extraction.
i. Social media and adolescent mental health: the good, the bad and the ugly
ii. Impact of Social Media on Mental Health of Students
iii. Pros & cons: impacts of social media on mental health
3- NotebookLM has generated a summary, podcast, and suggested questions based on these research papers.
4- Asking Questions
i. Summarization:
Prompt: “Summarize these research papers for me. Use bullet points.”
It will provide you with detailed bullet points along with all suggested questions.
You can save the response for later use. They'll be there when you need them!
Instead of basic summaries, you can use the following to extract valuable insights:
Prompt: “Extract the key findings, methodology, and limitations from these papers. Format as bullet points under each category, noting any conflicting results between studies.”
ii. Terminology extraction
Build your research vocabulary by identifying key concepts and how they're used across papers. This prompt helps create your field-specific glossary.
Prompt: “Create a list of key terms used in all these papers.”
And here’s a better version you can use if you’re not happy with the output of the simple prompt above:
Prompt: “Identify specialized terminology across all papers, providing brief definitions and noting how usage varies between studies. Group terms by research aspect (methodology/findings/theoretical framework)”
iii. Current Landscape of Research
Get a bird's-eye view of your research area.
Prompt: “Analyze all these research papers and provide an analysis of the current state of research on the impact of social media on mental health.”
NotebookLM gives you bullet-pointed overviews based on ALL your uploaded papers. You can exclude any source if you want by simply unchecking the checkbox next to it.
And if you want to map out in detail what we know, what's debated, and where the field is heading, here’s your prompt:
Prompt: "Compare and contrast the methodological approaches, sample sizes, and key findings across these papers. Highlight research gaps, methodological limitations, and areas of consensus vs. disagreement."
iv. Creative Assistance
Ask the Notebook LLM to help you decide on a final-year project title that will secure a job in the future with a possible list of roles.
Prompt: “Using these papers, generate a new research title to help me secure a job with possible list of roles.”
It creates research titles and suggests career paths your work could lead to!
And if you want to be specific enough (which you should be when talking to LLM), use this prompt:
"Based on the identified research gaps and emerging trends in these papers, suggest:
- Three specific research questions that build on existing findings
- Required methodological expertise for each question
- Industry sectors where this research expertise is valuable
- Specific job roles that align with these research directions."
v. Save and Share your notes
Keep your insights organized and accessible. Save key findings/ responses for easy reference when writing your paper.
Share Your Notes with co-researchers or with your Audience.
In this tutorial I have uploaded PDF files, you can also use Weblinks, and YouTube videos, and copy-paste your content.
NotebookLM is reshaping how we interact with research articles, easily presenting them in the form of summaries and podcast-style audio overviews. It shines when you:
Upload papers with opposing views
Mix recent and older studies
Add video lectures or conference talks
Include your own research notes
I like how it spots connections across these varied sources!
🎧 Beyond Text: The Audio Edge That podcast feature isn't just fancy tech - it's perfect for:
Processing dense theoretical papers while commuting
Getting a quick grasp of unfamiliar research areas
Reviewing multiple papers before meetings
Creating accessible research summaries
And here are some bonus prompts for you to test for your workflows:
Pattern Analysis: "Compare the methodologies and findings across these papers. Note any contradictions in results and highlight which findings have strong consensus."
Research Gap Mining: "Based on the limitations sections of these papers, identify emerging questions that haven't been fully addressed according to these studies. Group them by required research methods."
Cross-Paper Validation: "Find examples where different papers support or challenge each other's conclusions."
